Warning, Relax or You Will Be Nuked Again!
Art House, Nishinomiya, Japan
September 13, 1980

Sitting in a Buddha-like position and wearing a World War II Japanese soldier's flag like a veil over my face, I interviewed, with the aid of a translator, 60 to 70 different Japanese. I asked them a series of 15 to 20 questions, including: Why did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor? Would you buy an automobile made in South Korea? DO Japanese me do the dishes?

Following the interviews, each person was lead into the main room of the Art House space. Here, in this combination miniature art gallery and Italian coffee house each person could stay and listen to the rest of his countrymen go through the interview process. On the three white tables I had placed a world globe that represented the sudden shift of cultures and values as you go west from the Pacific coast of America, as opposed to the gradual change as you travel east around the world.
